Chapter 4: Estimation Calculation
Subject: Math
Teacher: Mary Jo Bruce
Grade Level: 1st grade
Analyze Learners:
In this chapter students will explore different ways to calculate estimations. The students will be able to give a more approximate guess when calculating an estimation. The activities the students will be participating in are of importance because; they can use these skills in everyday life.
Sunshine State Standards:
1. MA.K.G.3.1 Compare and order objects indirectly and directly using measurable attributes such as length, height and weight.
2. MA.1.A.2.2 Represent two digit numbers in terms of tens and ones.
State Objectives:
1. The students will be able to estimate within reasonable boundaries, being able to self correct.
2. The students will be able to group objects in groups of 10’s representing two digit numbers.
3. The students will be able to use non standardized forms of measurement.
4. The students will be able to examine an object, and make a education estimation.
5. The students will use group discussion and self evaluation to further learning.
6. The students will be able to construct a class graph using personal estimates.
Select Methods, Media, and Material:
Computers with Microsoft Office Word, paint aplication and internet, Alpha Smarts, reserve overhead projector, materials needed for activities.
Utilize Media:
Create a handout for the pumpkin activity, get the alpha smarts ready, reserve overhead projector, print out this chart to help the students count. Counting Table
Require Learner Participation: The students will be interacting with the other students and learning from their experience. Hopefully gaining knowledge about estimation.
Evaluate and Revise: This is my first year teaching. So this is first time for me doing these lessons. I will evaluate and revise at a later date. I will do my best to teach this lesson to the best of my ability and make adjustments for the next year.
